Everyone, at any age, needs health insurance. If there
is one thing in life that we limited control over, it is our
health. One illness can wipe us out financially. The average
hospital stay in Ohio is three days long and costs over $5,000.
Health
insurance requires underwriting. Underwriting is the process that
insurance companies go through to determine how risky it is to insure you.
If they find things in your health history that concern them, they have the
right to do one of three things:
1) Issue a policy that is rated. In other words, charge you more.
2) Issue a policy that includes riders. Riders are legal language
that excludes certain pre-existing conditions. For example, if you've
had several sinus infections, they can exclude payment for any services
related to sinus infections as part of their offer for insurance.
3) They can decline to offer you coverage.
This means that it is important to get a health insurance
plan in place. Once you have a policy, they cannot drop you -- they
can increase your rates, but they cannot drop your coverage unless they stop
offering health insurance in the state of Ohio.
